Worship Wednesday: Trading My Sorrows

Trading My Sorrows has been around at camp as long as we can remember. Our current staff dates back to 2007 in staff experience and we know it has been sung since then. This is a fun upbeat silly song with a message. Even our youngest campers get involved with this one. The actions are simple and ring home to our kiddos and staff each time we sing it!

I'm trading my sorrows (crying face)
Many of our campers get sad and homesick. This part of the song speaks to them. This also speaks deeper for anyone going through something.

I'm trading my shame (turn head away)
At camp we focus a lot on welcoming everyone, and making sure that no matter where you come from or what life experiences you have God wants you here and as part of His family.

I'm laying them down for the joy of the Lord (Hands lifted up to God)
We encourage everyone to dance and sing during worship even if they aren't feeling it at the moment. This helps teach kids that we can lay down our feelings and whatever is going on and focus for a time on God.

I'm trading my sickness (Blagh)
This part always gets a giggle. But it is relevant at camp and during this time of the year. Kids always seem to underestimate how much water they need to drink while at camp and inevitably get ill. Most of the time this is cured with water and rest but occasionally we do have to send some kids home, or quarantine some staff members. At some point we all understand this one.

I'm trading my pain (ow ow ow)
Rolled ankles, sunburns, bug bites, scrapes, & bruises all seem to come with the territory of summer camp. Some times we have more major issues and Urgent Care knows us by name, and our on call Dr and nurse staff are saints but usually it is minor!

When we sing these lines at camp it helps take whatever is going on and turns it to an act of worship. This is an incredible lesson to learn and the actions help us remember it for years to come!

So today, maybe the flu has your family trapped inside, or taxes are stressing you out! Whatever it is take a moment today to trade it for the Joy of the Lord!!!

Enjoy!
